1805 - Michigan becomes a territory 1817- Construction of the Erie Canal begins 1825 - The Erie Canal is opened 1829 - Andrew Jackson is elected president 1834 - A Michigan census is completed 1835 - Michigan's constitution of 1835 is written 1835 - Stevens T. Mason becomes the governor of Michigan, but congress refused to recognize Michigan as a state 1835 - The dispute over the Toledo Strip begins 1836 - President Jackson signs the bill that gives Ohio the Toledo Strip and Michigan part of the Upper Peninsula. The Toledo War is ended. 1837 - Michigan becomes the 26th state to join the Union |
